1st LAR’s primary weapon system is the Light Armored Vehicle (LAV)-25, a fast, amphibious, armored reconnaissance vehicle powered by a turbo-charged diesel engine.

The LAV-25 crew consists of a six-man squad comprised of the Vehicle Commander (VC), Gunner, Driver and four Scouts. This crew is trained and equipped to perform both traditional infantry missions as well as reconnaissance tasks and direct action.

The primary weapon of the LAV-25 is the M242 25MM Bushmaster Chain Gun with two M240 7.62MM machine guns in support. Two 4-barrel smoke grenade launchers
provide both additional lethality and obscuration capability.

A flexible asset of the Division, LAV companies perform traditional Calvary missions, such as screening and guarding, reconnaissance in force and direct assault.
